Shrove Tuesday is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. The tradition of this day often includes eating pancakes before the beginning of Lent. Why pancakes you ask? Because the ingredients in pancakes like sugar, fat, flour and eggs are often those that are restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent. So go ahead, indulge in some pancakes today! And make them Shirley J-style!

Shirley J Recipes Step-by-Step: Broccoli & Cauliflower au Gratin

I’m happy to introduce a new blog series, Shirley J Recipes Step-by-Step. Here we’ll take you on a visual journey of exactly how to make Shirley J recipes, just like the title says: step-by-step. We love seeing how dishes look at any given stage in the process, and want to show you just how easy and foolproof our recipes are to make in your own kitchen.

This week’s Shirley J Step-by-Step Recipe:
This week we’re showing you how to make our recipe for Broccoli & Cauliflower au Gratin. I love everything about this dish. First off– this dish is delicious and made super-simple because of Whisk Bliss. Second, I can never, and I mean, never get enough cauliflower. As a kid, I was always throwing elbows around the veggie tray fighting for the cauliflower. Little did I realize that I (usually) was the only one wanting that white cruciferous vegetable. Third, I love anything au gratin.

What does au gratin mean, anyway?
The term au gratin refers to a dish that is baked with a topping of seasoned breadcrumbs and cheese. When the dish is complete, the au gratin topping should be golden brown and is often done by baking in the oven, placing under a broiler or using a culinary torch.

Au gratin potatoes are probably the most common au gratin dish. But today, we are mixing it up and using some very yummy veggies: broccoli and cauliflower. We are pretty much willing to bet that even those anti-veggie eaters will love this dish. Why? Whisk Bliss. It’s creamy, it’s dreamy and time and time again, we have customers tell us that Whisk Bliss is their secret to getting their children to try vegetables!

Alright, enough terminology. Let’s make Broccoli & Cauliflower au Gratin!

Here’s what you’ll need for our Broccoli & Cauliflower au Gratin side dish: Shirley J Whisk Bliss Original, water, broccoli, cauliflower, sharp cheddar cheese, bread crumbs, butter, garlic powder and onion powder.

First things, first. Preheat that oven of yours. 375 degrees is the magic number. And yes, it’s 100% normal to be making a cheesy side dish at 10:14 am…yes, in the morning.

Bring two pots of water to boil. And get ready to cut up those veggies.

Aren’t they gorgeous? And don’t you feel good that you are feeding your family veggies? You should be proud of yourself right now.

Alright. All chopped up now. Perfect timing too, because our water is boiling.

Time to dump. Dump the cauliflower into one pot and the broccoli into another. Separate pots, equal in deliciousness. Oh yeah, cook cauliflower for 8-10 minutes.

Cook broccoli for 4-5 minutes.

When veggies are cooked. Drain and rinse with cold water to shock them. We don’t want mushy veggies. Remember these two groups are about to go bake in a hot tub of cheesy, Whisk Bliss yumminess.

For this recipe we are using Whisk Bliss Original. We love its versatile nature and how we can add any flavor and ingredients to it to get exactly what we want out of any given dish. The result is the most creamy dish that is velvety and perfectly flavored. In the case of this dish, we are adding a nice sharp, cheddar cheese.

Let’s start some Whisk Bliss magic! To make Whisk Bliss, in its purest form, you just need water, and of course, a whisk.

Measure out a cup of Whisk Bliss and repeat three times. By the way, have you seen our Whisk Bliss commercial? We happen to love it.

Now grab a whisk, preferably a Shirley J one. Did you know, right now we are giving away free Shirley J whisks with each Whisk Bliss order?

Now whisk away. I like to do so over medium heat and bring to a slow boil.

It happens faster than you think. Check out those race-track lines. That is a sign that you are right where you should be. It’s really thickening up at this point.

Now it’s time to add the cheese. We used our favorite sharp. Is anything better than cheese? (Well, besides Whisk Bliss?) And let’s pretend that you can’t see my chipped nail polish. My mother would gasp.

Stir some more. The hot Whisk Bliss will melt the cheddar right into the mixture and soon you’ll have the perfect cheese sauce for your Broccoli and Cauliflower au Gratin.

See what I mean? Cheese-sauce perfection.

At this point it is perfectly acceptable to grab a spoon and taste, taste, taste.

Now back to veggies. Pour them into a sprayed 3-quart casserole dish.

Mix ‘em up.

And let’s pour that heavenly, cheesy, Whisk Bliss sauce right over it all.

Wow, that’s delicious. But why stop there. Let’s add more flavor and texture.

If this is going to be a true au gratin dish. We must make our bread crumb topping. Use any type of plain breadcrumbs you have on hand. This time we used panko, but yesterday we used traditional-style plain breadcrumbs. Both are great. Just use what you have.

Stir. Again. Do we see a theme here, people? Stirring equals delicious food.

Sprinkle bread crumb mixture over entire dish. So pretty. And you will love the garlic and onion flavor. It’s subtle and savory.

Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Looks done to me!

Oh dear, hold me back!

Now that’s what I’m talking about! Perfectly cooked broccoli and cauliflower amidst a glorious cheese sauce made by Whisk Bliss Original! You get the wonderful added texture of the bread crumb topping and some oniony-garlicky flavor too! It’s a great balance to the creamy, cheesy sauce.

Time-Saving Tips:
* Buy pre-cut broccoli and cauliflower.
* Buy shredded cheese

Possible Recipe Variations:
* Use all cauliflower or all broccoli.
* Try a different vegetable.
* Season your breadcrumbs with Shirley J Pizza & Pasta Seasoning or Shirley J Onion Seasoning in place of the onion and garlic powders. If you really want to mix things up, try Shirley J Barbeque Sauce Mix. That would be fun.
* Instead of serving in a 3-quart casserole dish, serve in smaller or individual ramekins. This would be fun for a dinner party.

Earlier this month, Jennifer of Redhead Reviews tried out Shirley J Dough Enhancer. We instantly knew she loved our dough enhancer after seeing the title of her blog post, “Make Your Bread ‘Poof’ Even More with Shirley J Dough Enhancer!”

Here’s what she had to say:

A couple of weeks ago, I got a really neat little product in the mail to review.

I was quite excited to try this dough enhancer by Shirley J products, because I love making bread, but it doesn’t always rise as much as I would like. So yesterday, I set out to test whether this product worked as well as the instructions said it did or not.

Shirley J Natural Dough Enhancer strengthens the gluten structure of homemade bread. You can now slice and spread butter and jams effortlessly without making a mess–which I normally do when making homemade bread.

I made my bread dough in 2 different batches, using exactly the same method and ingredients for making it, except the red bowl had the dough enhancer in the mix.

You can see in the bowl that the red bowl has just a little more poof than the other bowl. I still wasn’t convinced yet. So I waited until after it had risen all the way, I punched it down, and put it in the loaf pans and it had risen again.

The glass loaf pan is the one with the enhancer it. Can you see the difference? At this point I knew this product was true to its word, but I wanted to see the finished product

As you can see it did rise more than the normal loaf. The bread was light and delicious and tasted so good with butter! And it was SO much easier to slice than my other bread and it did not fall apart on me at all.

One of the best ways to see and get to know New York City is to take an open-air bus tour of the island. NYC trips are full of walking from neighborhood beyond neighborhood, so a nice break on a double decker bus with a tour guide is great! Your feet thank you for it, that’s for sure.

You can hop on and off these buses all day long. One of our stops was the 9/11 Memorial. This was one of the trip highlights and a memory we will all cherish for the rest of our lives. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

For most of our group, this was their first time in the big apple. You haven’t visited New York City until you’ve seen the bright lights of Times Square and had a slice of New York cheesecake. So what did we do our first night? We walked over from our hotel to Times Square and ate dinner at Junior’s. Sure they’ve got some great goulash, stroganoff and a big Reuban. But what we really went for was the cheesecake.

If you’re a cheesecake purist, get their original cheesecake. It doesn’t dissappoint. But rest assured, they’ve got a list of other cheesecake variations like strawberry shortcake cheesecake, pumpkin cheesecake and more!

New York in the fall is gorgeous. We took some time to walk, ride and stroll through Central Park. The leaves were beginning to change and the weather was perfect. Our favorite spots include, Bethesda Fountain, Belvedere Castle, Shakespeare’s Garden and Strawberry Fields.

Afterwards we ventured over to Levain Bakery–home of the 6 oz. chocolate chip walnut cookie! Levain is famous for this cookie and received much acclaim, including features on Food Network, Bon Appetit, New York Times and Oprah just to name a few. These cookies are gooey-good and warm on the outside, studded with the perfect amount of delicious chocolate. They’ve got a nice crunch from the outside of the cookie and walnuts. We swear this is the best chocolate chip cookie ever made!

For those who might be looking for a way to help American servicemen and women who are away from home and putting their lives on the line each day in challenging circumstances, an Orem food products company has come up with an idea.

Shirley J — described as a “just-add-water” cooking company with a 30-year commercial history — has taken on a new initiative, said Amanda Wallace, public relations assistant with the company. Shirley J is teaming up with Soldiers’ Angels, a non-profit organization that sends food and treats to troops. The goal is to brighten up military meals by delivering to the troops the versatile and easy-preparation products that are the specialty of Shirley J.

After analyzing the needs of those serving in the military, the two partnering organizations have picked out four Shirley J cooking products best-suited to the troops: a universal sauce, a white cheddar soup and sauce base, a barbecue sauce mix and a dessert cream.

“We love that the products have been tried and tested,” said Becky Olsen, communications and social media manager for Shirley J. “They take the guesswork out for home cooks, and now, for soldiers.”

The universal sauce is a company best-seller, Olsen said, and can be used in lieu of bechamel sauce to easily make dishes such as macaroni and cheese, sausage gravy, broccoli-cheddar soup or enchiladas.

The white cheddar soup and sauce base is the universal sauce with real cheese added and functions as is, or as an alfredo sauce.

The barbecue sauce mix is “an American tradition that can be shipped out,” Olsen said. Members of the military can get a real taste of home by adding the sauce or seasoning to meats, vegetables, potato wedges, dips or coleslaw. It can enhance burgers or pulled pork, or can be mixed with mayonnaise or horseradish for a sandwich condiment.

Possibilities for the dessert cream are to add water to create rice or other puddings, pie filling or fruit topping.

“The thing we like, too, is that you really can’t mess up the preparation,” Olsen said. “It’s good to know we’re not sending out a complicated product.”

There are two ways to participate in the food-for-troops project. A good option for those who don’t know a soldier personally, but are supportive of them, is to buy Shirley J products online at shirleyj.com, and choose Soldiers’ Angels as the shipping address. Customers can also purchase Shirley J products online or at the retail store at 15 E. 400 South in Orem, then prepare and ship their own care packages to soldiers serving stateside or abroad. Store employees are happy to help customers select appropriate items, and if a soldier has access to an oven, there is an array of bakery products — from brownies to sweet rolls — that do not require the addition of ingredients such as eggs and oil, and can be shipped easily then prepared with just the addition of water.

Shirley J is contributing to the project, too, Wallace said, with a match program. For every three Shirley J products sent to Soldiers’ Angels, the company will donate a Universal Sauce 5-pack to the non-profit organization for distribution.
